Reflection on the 7th Day of Simbang Gabi

Gospel Reading: Luke 1:46-56 (RSV-2CE)

“And Mary said,
‘My soul magnifies the Lord,
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden.
For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed;
for he who is mighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
And his mercy is on those who fear him
from generation to generation.
He has shown strength with his arm,
he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts,
he has put down the mighty from their thrones,
and exalted those of low degree;
he has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent empty away.
He has helped his servant Israel,
in remembrance of his mercy,
as he spoke to our fathers,
to Abraham and to his posterity forever.’
And Mary remained with her about three months and returned to her home.”

Reflection:

On the seventh day of Simbang Gabi, we hear Mary’s Magnificat, a beautiful song of praise and gratitude to God. Mary’s words reflect her deep humility and her recognition of God’s greatness and mercy. She acknowledges how God works through the lowly and brings justice, exalting the humble and filling the hungry with good things.

Mary’s prayer is a call for us to reflect on our own gratitude to God. Like Mary, we are invited to magnify the Lord in our lives, recognizing His blessings and His faithfulness. Her song is also a reminder of God’s care for the marginalized and His desire for justice and mercy in the world.

As we draw closer to Christmas, let us take time to reflect on the ways God has been at work in our lives, filling us with His grace and love. May we, like Mary, respond with joy and gratitude, proclaiming His greatness in all that we do.

Reflection Question:
What blessings can I magnify and give thanks to God for during this Advent season?
