Reflection on the 1st Day of Simbang Gabi

Gospel Reading: John 5:33-36 (RSV-2CE)

“You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. Not that the testimony which I receive is from man; but I say this that you may be saved. He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. But the testimony which I have is greater than that of John; for the works which the Father has granted me to accomplish, these very works which I am doing, bear me witness that the Father has sent me.”

Reflection:

On the first day of Simbang Gabi, we hear Jesus speak of John the Baptist, who bore witness to the truth. John was a “burning and shining lamp,” pointing others to the coming of Christ. Yet, Jesus reminds us that His testimony—the works given to Him by the Father—surpasses John’s witness. These works reveal His divine mission and the truth that He is the Savior sent by God.

As we begin this novena of early dawn Masses, we are called to reflect on how we bear witness to Christ in our lives. Like John, we are invited to be lamps shining in the darkness, pointing others toward the truth of Jesus. At the same time, we are reminded to look to Christ’s works—His teachings, miracles, and ultimate sacrifice—as proof of His love for us and the Father’s plan of salvation.

In this season of preparation, may we allow the light of Christ to shine through us, drawing others closer to Him as we anticipate His coming.

Reflection Question:
How can I be a “burning and shining lamp” that points others to the truth and love of Christ this Advent season?
